The Invisible Matters presents

THE
IMPERFECTION
MODEL

We encounter reality in pieces.
We make versions from what we
encounter.
Then, sometimes, we forget that the version is not the whole.
The Imperfection Model (TIM) is a way of noticing what happens when a partial encounter becomes a fixed conclusion about a person, an organisation, ourselves, a system, or the world.
It asks a simple but consequential question: How much authority should a version of reality be allowed to exercise?
The ground beneath the model

Reality exceeds
every
encounter.

No person, model, diagnosis, dataset, story, photograph, memory or institution encounters everything. Every encounter has a position, a scale, a duration and a limit.

That does not make our versions useless. A version may be accurate without being complete. The problem begins when accuracy is mistaken for total jurisdiction.

02 / THE ARCHITECTURE

REALITY

ENCOUNTER

RESOLUTION

CAPACITY

AUTHORITY

Reality is encountered > The encounter gives us a certain resolution >
That resolution creates a certain capacity to understand or act.

A principle of proportion

Authority

Where resolution cannot increase, authority should decrease.
≤

Resolution

Where consequence is high, the demand for resolution should rise.
03
SIX PROPOSITIONS

Partial does not
mean false.

01

Reality exceeds every encounter.

No encounter captures the whole.
02

Every encounter leaves a trace.

What we meet changes what can be represented.
03

Every version is constructed.

Even faithful representations are made from a position.
04

A version may be accurate without being complete.

Partial does not mean false.
05

Truth does not confer total jurisdiction.

Being right about something does not make us right about everything around it.
06

Authority ≤ Resolution.

Our power to conclude or act should remain proportionate to what we can actually resolve.
What does this look like in
ordinary life?

Before conclusion,
another question.

A PERSON

“I know what you’re like.”

TIM asks
How much of them have you actually encountered?
An organisation

“This employee is underperforming.”

TIM asks
At what resolution was that conclusion formed?
An AI system

“I can execute this task.”

TIM asks
Does task resolution include consequence resolution?
A coach

“I know what this clientneeds.”

TIM asks
Has your authority exceeded your encounter?
The Frozen Arc

A version becomes
dangerous when it loses
its ability to move.

DID
→
IS

Will always be
Something happened.
It becomes a description.
The description becomes identity.
Identity becomes destiny.
MAKE ROOM restores movement. It does not require us to deny what happened. It asks whether the
authority of the old version still matches the resolution available now.
Discovering: reality gets a turn

Act without requiring reality to
confirm the premise you arrived
with.

The encounter is allowed to alter the representation. Reality gets a turn.

resolution
When consequence cannot travel back, representation can become
detached from reality.
Action produces consequences. If those consequences can travel back
upstream and alter future understanding and authority, the system can
learn.
03
One architecture, many encounters

TIM is the architecture beneath The Invisible Matters,
but it is encountered through different forms.

01

The Book

Explores how systems shape identity, attention and the self.
02

The Songs

Let ideas become encounters rather than explanations.
03

Make Room

Restores movement where a story, role, fear or conclusion has become too fixed.
04

Rendition. Not anAudition.

Creates a room in which a work can be encountered again rather than merely judged.
05

#SingThisOneSong

Lets one song remain open to lineage, reinterpretation and further human encounter.
06

AI / Governance

Asks whether capability, execution leverage and authority are being granted beyond consequence resolution.
The model must remain movable (TIM)

TIM is a version
too.

It is not a claim to have captured reality completely. It is a way of noticing when our
representations of reality begin exercising more authority than their resolution warrants.
If the encounter changes, the model must remain
capable of changing with it.
The model therefore submits itself to its own architecture. It remains open to re-encounter,
revision and greater resolution.
An invitation

The purpose is not to
become uncertain about
everything. It is to become
more precise.

About what we know, what we do not know, and how much authority either should
carry.
Encounter more. Fix less. Leave room to move.
